Questions photographers ask

How the fundraisers work, where the money goes, and what founding members get.

How it works

What is a portrait fundraiser?

A nonprofit invites its families to give a set gift, such as $99. Each gift includes a portrait session with you. The nonprofit keeps the gift, the family gets a session, and you meet new clients who already trust the cause.

After the session, you sell portraits the way you already do: an ordering appointment, an online gallery, or both.

How do photographers partner with schools and nonprofits?

Start with the nonprofit finder, which shows every IRS-listed charity near your studio by cause and size. Reach out with the consult script in the app. When a nonprofit says yes, they fill in one registration form from your link, sign the campaign agreement and connect their own payment account.

Why would a nonprofit choose a portrait fundraiser?

Families get something they want, so it’s an easy yes. The nonprofit has nothing to buy, store or deliver: you photograph the families, and every gift goes straight into the nonprofit’s own account, less the usual processing fee.

Is this guaranteed to make money?

No. You give a session and a print as part of each gift, and what you earn depends on your market, your nonprofit partners and how you sell afterward. The app gives you the system, the paperwork and the training. It can’t promise results.

What kinds of nonprofits can run a campaign?

Any registered charity: schools and PTOs, booster clubs, alumni groups, community causes and more. There are templates for school campaigns, booster clubs, alumni and heritage groups, community nonprofits, holiday gifts and event days.

What does a donor receive?

You choose, per campaign: the session length and the print size, with your regular retail price for each. Those prices set the value shown on the donor’s receipt. You also choose how long donors have to use their session.

Will nonprofits and donors see the name CoPhoto?

No. Campaign pages, emails, the nonprofit’s dashboard and receipts all carry your studio’s logo, colors and fonts. You can use your own web address for campaign pages.

Money and paperwork

Who holds the donation money?

Nobody but the nonprofit. Gifts are paid straight into the nonprofit’s own payment account. You never handle their money, and neither do we. Refunds and payouts are handled by the nonprofit in that account.

Are there fees on donations?

CoPhoto takes nothing from donations. The nonprofit’s payment provider charges its usual processing fee, and donors can choose to cover it at checkout.

Is the gift tax-deductible?

Each donor gets a receipt in the nonprofit’s name. Because the donor receives a session and a print, only the part of the gift above their fair market value can be deductible, and the receipt says so. The app works out that value from the retail prices you enter. This isn’t tax advice; donors should ask their own tax advisor.

Are there rules for photographers who run these?

Some states have rules for businesses that promote a sale as benefiting a charity. Setup includes an acknowledgment of your responsibilities, and we recommend checking your own state’s rules before your first campaign.

The app

Do I deliver galleries or sell prints inside the app?

No. Keep using the gallery, ordering and lab tools you already trust. The app runs the fundraiser, the booking and the client records, and you log each sale on the client card so your results stay complete.

I sell online galleries, not in-person. Does it still work?

Yes. When you set up, you choose gallery, in-person ordering appointments, or a mix. Your booking steps, follow-up emails and client cards follow what you chose.

Can I bring in my existing clients?

Yes. Add the nonprofits you already work with to your pipeline, and add past clients as client cards.

Founding members

What do founding members get?

3 months free when the app opens to you, then $250 off any plan each year, or $20 off each month ($349 a year for Solo). The discount stays on any plan you move to, for as long as you stay subscribed. You also get a direct line to us while we shape what comes next.

When can I start?

We’re opening the app to founding members in small groups. Apply now, and we’ll email you when your studio is ready to open. Nothing is charged until then.

Who can apply?

Professional portrait photographers in the United States. Spots are capped at 50 studios, and some areas open later than others. If spots aren’t open in your area yet, you’ll go on the waitlist and hear from us first.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time. You can also switch between monthly and yearly billing. The founding discount stays on any plan for as long as you keep your subscription.
